Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027: Six Funded Weeks in the United States for Young African Leaders
The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the US Government's flagship exchange programme for young African leaders. It pays for six weeks at a US university in June to August 2027, including flights, housing, meals and visa support. It does not fund your business and it is not a route to living in the US. Applications close on 13 October 2026 at 16:00 GMT.

IZONAI Analysis
This is one of the few international programmes that almost any young professional or founder in sub-Saharan Africa can apply for at no cost. It is also widely misunderstood, so it is worth being clear about what it is. It is a funded exchange programme. For six weeks you study and network at a US university with about 25 other African leaders. The US Government pays for your travel, housing and meals. It is not business funding. No grant or investment comes with it. It is not a relocation route either. You travel on a J-1 exchange visa and return home when the programme ends. The application is still open, and there is time to apply if you start now. The form asks for a CV and five short essays, so a strong application takes several days, not an hour. If you cannot finish in time, use this page to prepare for the next cycle. The fellowship has opened each year at around the same time, though a 2028 call is not yet confirmed from the official source. Eligibility
You must be aged 25 to 35 on 13 October 2026, although exceptional applicants aged 21 to 24 may be considered. You must be a citizen and resident of one of the 49 eligible sub-Saharan African countries, and be living there permanently on 1 February 2027 and when the fellowship starts in June 2027. You must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English, and eligible for a US J-1 visa. The eligible countries are Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Who should consider this
Founders, managers and professionals aged 25 to 35 who live in an eligible African country, have a record of leadership in their business, organisation or community, and can be away from work for six weeks in mid-2027. The Business and Trade track is the natural fit for entrepreneurs, and the Emerging Technologies track for tech founders.
Who may not be suitable
You are not eligible if you are a US citizen or permanent resident; if you have taken part in the fellowship before; or if you, or an immediate family member, work for the US Government or for IREX, which administers the programme. Africans living outside the eligible countries do not qualify, because you must be resident in an eligible country. You cannot bring dependants with you. If what you need is capital for your business or a way to relocate, this is the wrong programme.
Key conditions
The fellowship is temporary and you return home afterwards. It runs for six weeks from June 2027, or about ten weeks for the fellows chosen for the optional professional placement. The official instructions specify a passport from an eligible country that is valid until at least 28 February 2028. Semi-finalists are interviewed by the US embassy or consulate in their country. Not yet confirmed from the official source: whether the two-year home-country rule that applies to some J-1 visas applies to fellows, and whether you can apply before you hold a passport.
What to prepare
An up-to-date CV with dates for each job, course and volunteer role. Clear examples of leadership and of the results you have achieved. Your reasons for choosing your track, and what you plan to do with the experience when you return home. Draft the five essays offline, keep each within 150 to 350 words, and proofread before you paste them into the form. Check your passport's expiry date now.
