IZONAI Analysis

The real value of TradeRoots Africa is not simply the training offered to 1,000 SMEs. It is the progression pathway available to businesses that demonstrate stronger export potential. The programme begins by strengthening the trade capabilities of a large group of African SMEs. A smaller group then progresses to more advanced digital and sector support, while 50 businesses move into export acceleration involving buyer engagement, trade finance facilitation and transaction support. For an existing African business that already has a viable product or service, this could therefore become more than a training programme. It may provide a structured route from being export-interested to becoming export-ready and potentially connecting with actual international buyers. IZONAI Digital therefore considers this most relevant to businesses that can already answer three questions clearly: What do we sell? Which market do we want to enter? What specific barrier is currently preventing us from getting there? Businesses that cannot yet answer those questions may still benefit from the foundational training, but businesses with clear products, target markets and identifiable export barriers are likely to be better positioned to make practical use of the programme.

Eligibility

Majority African-owned; registered and legally operating in an AfCFTA State Party; trading for at least 24 months; annual turnover above US$5,000; an export-ready product or service rather than a business idea; a clear target export market or corridor; commitment to programme modules and the Trade Readiness Assessment; an active, scalable digital presence; and participation by the business owner or a senior manager.

Who should consider this

African-owned SMEs that are already trading and want to expand into regional or international markets should consider this programme. It is particularly relevant to emerging, growth-stage and established businesses with an export-ready product or service that need stronger capabilities in areas such as market access, export procedures, logistics, customs, digital trade, trade finance readiness and buyer engagement. This is not an idea-stage opportunity. Businesses should already have a trading history and be able to demonstrate genuine potential to enter new markets.

Who may not be suitable

Businesses that are pre-revenue or still at concept stage; businesses primarily seeking a grant or loan; and businesses unable to commit approximately two hours per week to the online modules between November 2026 and March 2027.

Key conditions

Applicants must commit to the programme requirements, including the Trade Readiness Assessment and approximately two hours per week for online modules during Tier 1. Progression is selective: 1,000 SMEs enter Trade Foundations, while 200 progress to Digital and Sector Skills, and 50 to Export Acceleration. Only SMEs participating in Tier 1 are eligible for the later tiers. The ICC programme page describes eligibility across AfCFTA State Parties, while the current application portal identifies 11 priority countries: Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda. Applicants outside these priority countries should confirm eligibility with ICC before applying.

What to prepare

Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate that they operate a genuine existing business, have been trading for at least 24 months, generate more than US$5,000 in annual turnover, and have a product or service with export potential. Beyond meeting the basic eligibility requirements, applicants should be able to explain which market or trade corridor they want to enter, why their product or service is suitable for that market, what currently prevents them from exporting successfully, and how participation in TradeRoots Africa could help them overcome those barriers. Applicants should avoid treating the programme as a funding application. TradeRoots Africa is an export-readiness and market-access programme rather than a grant or loan opportunity.
