IZONAI Analysis
Chevening is one of the few scholarships that pays for everything: tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, return flights and the visa. That makes it highly competitive, and the eligibility rules are applied strictly. Three points rule out many applicants before their answers are even considered. 1. The two-year rule. Your undergraduate studies must have finished at least two years before the application deadline, and you need at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after that degree. 2. The return commitment. You must commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends. Chevening is not a route to settling in the UK. 3. The offer timing. You do not need a university offer to submit your Chevening application. You choose three eligible UK master's courses now, and you must hold an unconditional offer from at least one of them by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027. A Chevening application is not a university application, so apply to your chosen universities separately and early. With only days left, applying now is realistic only if you already meet the eligibility rules and can write strong answers quickly. If you cannot, use this page to prepare for the next cycle. Rules can differ by country, so confirm every detail at the official source before you apply.
Eligibility
You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory; commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your scholarship ends; hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's programme, with your undergraduate studies finished at least two years before the application deadline; have at least two years' work experience (2,800 hours) gained after completing your undergraduate degree; and apply to three different eligible UK university courses, holding an unconditional offer from at least one of them by 8 July 2027. Work experience can be full-time or part-time employment, voluntary work, or paid or unpaid internships, and you can combine up to fifteen separate periods of work. There is no upper age limit, and already holding a master's degree does not stop you applying.
Who should consider this
Graduates from Chevening-eligible countries who have at least two years of work experience since their degree, a clear record of leadership or influence, and a credible plan for how a UK master's degree will help them contribute at home.
Who may not be suitable
You are not eligible if you hold British or dual British citizenship (limited exceptions apply); hold refugee status in a country that is not Chevening-eligible; are resident in the UK when you apply; have previously studied in the UK on a UK Government-funded scholarship; or are an employee, or a close relative of an employee, of the organisations Chevening lists as excluded, such as UK Government departments, the British Council and partner universities. Check the official eligibility guidance for the full rules.
Key conditions
The award is for a one-year master's degree at a UK university. You must return to your home country for at least two years afterwards. Selection is competitive, so meeting the eligibility rules does not guarantee an interview or an award. Successful candidates must hold at least one unconditional offer by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027. The monthly living allowance depends on whether you study in London or elsewhere and is set each year.
What to prepare
Have your degree details and completion date ready, along with the dates and weekly hours for each period of work experience. Choose your three courses using the official Chevening course finder, and apply to those universities separately. Draft your written answers offline in your own words and proofread them before you paste them into the application form.
